When you go to sleep at night, your body goes through a specific cycle with several distinct stages. These can be broken into stage one, when you’re starting to doze; the light, easily interrupted sleep of stage two; the first stage of deep sleep; and the second stage of deep sleep, differentiated by REM (also known as Rapid Eye Movement).
This cycle lasts for around 90 minutes, and it’s estimated that you need to go through at least four to six cycles each day to achieve the optimal amount of sleep you need for day to day functioning!
With this in mind, it’s important to make sure that your sleep remains as uninterrupted as possible – if you’re waking up every hour or two with back pain or discomfort in your shoulders and hips, you’re disrupting the deep sleep your body needs to keep you bright and energized.
